Parenting...not for the faint of heart

If you are squeamish, you might not want to look at the pictures I am going to post.
Shannon is traveling with a friend and they decided to stop in Chiang Mai, Thailand and do a Thai massage class for a few weeks. Shannon called the other evening and we had a conversation that went something like this.....

Shannon.."all is good now....but I had a hole in my leg. I can tell you now because it is all better. I have been to the hospital and been on 2 courses of antibiotics and the hole in my leg is only a scab now."
Me..."WHAT!!!?"

Shannon: "Really, mom, that is why I didn't call sooner...I didn't want you to worry. It really is all better now. I will send you a newer picture than these."

Me..."WHAT?!!!"

Shannon..."Really I am fine...don't worry. I have moved out the hovel I was staying in so I am in a clean place now and it is finally almost healed."

Me..."what-were-you-on, how-long-were-you-on-it,how-did-this-happen, when-do-you-see-the doctor again, why-didn't-you-call sooner.what do you mean you moved OUT OF A HOVEL!!!!?"

Shannon.."this is why I didn't tell you sooner. You are such a worrier...really, all is good. I will send you a newer picture next week when I can upload photos again.
Love you and talk to you soon.
OH and by the way...I am going to India in 2 weeks. Why don't you come over for spring break?"

I ask you...you look at the photos and tell me if I overreacted.......

Hovel? Hole in leg? If I had a child with a hole in his/her leg, I would have reacted the exact same way. All it takes for an infection to become systemic is good proximity to bloodflow and lack of antibiotics. Scary.

Good Golly, Miss Molly! Whatever happened in the first place? Insect bite? You're so right, Neva, parenting is NOT easy.

If this has something to do with Thai massage, I will never try it! :-)

Me thinks that the parenting statement is absolutely not to be taken lightly. The children do not realize how much this "Little Stuff" affects us.

it happened because i picked too much at a ingrown hair! the solution is to stop shaving my legs. i healed it with sunshine and raw food

I do believe that there is no cure for an ingrown hair, Shave or not, you will still get ingrown hairs. Now for the "i healed it with sunshine and raw food" I did notice that you said that "I have been to the hospital and been on 2 courses of antibiotics" that healed the hole in your leg, not sunshine and raw food.

Thank goodness it's getting better! Those silly kids! Don't they know they'll kill themselves! Just love the conversation you added. Just great!

Ooo I would have loved to get tooled up with sterile saline, lots of clean paper towels etc, don "science" goggles and weild a lovely lancing device over that beautiful ripe infection ~ yurks! That looks so painful and I bet it felt hot and itchy. When you've got something like that you just want rid. I'm glad your daughter seemed to get the proper treatment. When I was in India I caught amoebic diarrhoea and had NO IDEA how/where to find a dr... in the end I just did what everyone else did, tourist or local and trotted down the local pharmacy, described symptoms and got a "panamoebacide" so powerful it was labelled "carcinogenic"! It got rid of nearly all my D&V within 3 days though... You just gotta do what you gotta do. I hope your daughter does realize how major a problem that could become? I know about these things because I've had a longstanding problem with IV drugs. Take it from me ~ You don't mess around with abscesses!!

Well she just isn't a mother yet, and that is nasty looking, she didn't tell you how she got it? was it bug bite, did she fall on a nail. My gosh i am full of questions, Remind her of this when she has children. Now she has everyone wondering what happend.
I am so with you on this.

I so agree to you... being a mother is very tough! But visiting Shannon's blog, I can see that she's a lovely and spirited young lady with a fine heart for the world. I would say that you have done a great job :). Best wishes.
